Ready two Go Makes an Appearance at the 1st Annual SJ Arts Group Event, Independent Artists Against Violence On Women.

SJAG was started by CEO Annalisa San Juan in support of making violence against women non-existent. The idea started years ago when San Juan, herself a survivor, set out to put her skills and experience in PR and music, film and arts promotions to help the cause.

Students and educators at the University of South Florida are extremely active in their fight against STDs. A group of students, the REACH Peer Educators, do educational and informational presentations on safer sex and alcohol, and sexual assault on campus as well as run national health awareness campaigns on campus.

Ready two Go will be making appearances at two -- count them, TWO -- Minnesota charity events this coming weekend!

On the east side of the Mississippi (St. Paul), Ready two Go will be featured in a gift basket to be auctioned off at the St. Paul production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. All proceeds from this event will be benefiting Cornerstone, an organization dedicated to preventing domestic violence.

On the west side of the river (Minneapolis), Ready two Go can be found in gift bags at the Rock the Cause (RTC) concert. RTC organizes and promotes music events for other non-profit organizations.

Sexual Health on Obama's Agenda

President Obama has just a few things on his agenda as he rolls into office. Among them are continuing education and funding for HIV/AIDS prevention. Look at what has been recently published on the White House website:

Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, President Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. The President will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. The President also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. President Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma — too often tied to homophobia — that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.

- Empower Women to Prevent HIV/AIDS: In the United States, the percentage of women diagnosed with AIDS has quadrupled over the last 20 years. Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. President Obama introduced the Microbicide Development Act, which will accelerate the development of products that empower women in the battle against AIDS. Microbicides are a class of products currently under development that women apply topically to prevent transmission of HIV and other infections.

There's a large faction of the Ready two Go family who resides in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul for those of you who are unfamiliar). As I type, both cities are gearing up for an onslaught of media and conventioneers as the Republican National Convention makes ready to swing into St. Paul. The Democratic National Convention is already at full speed in Colorado.

Now that the candidates are being officially recognized and we know who their running mates are (well, McCain's veep will be announced shortly), take some time to become familiar with their stance on issues that matter to you.

We at Ready two Go are naturally interested in how the candidates stack up on HIV/AIDs funding, global health and sex education.

Value of HPV vaccine for adults questioned
St. Paul Pioneer Press 8/20

Note the wording of the above headline.

The word “value” is meant to denote dollar value in this article, not the drug’s viability. The article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press details the FDA’s reluctance to approve the Gardasil vaccine, which may protect against HPV, for use in women in their mid-twenties to mid-forties. Currently, it has been approved and is being marketed to girls in target ages 11 and 12, presumably before becoming sexually active. It is meant to guard against the strains of HPV which may cause cervical cancer.

Because of its effectiveness, makers of the vaccine wanted to market it to older women as well. Per the article in the link below, the vaccine for women in the 25 to 45 age bracket is cost prohibitive even though it has been effective and will, therefore, not be made available to adult women.

This just accentuates the need for individuals to proactively protect themselves from STDs. While condoms are not always an effective deterrent for HPV, they are successful against many other forms of STDs. Ultimately, education will be your best protection. We can’t always depend on the FDA to assist us with our sexual health, so get to know your options and arm yourself with the proper tools.

The Journey - Final Day

Today is our last day of the journey. We started and ended our day by delivering food parcels to the senior center. We had the opportunity to listen to Linda Kelsey read a story to the seniors and then proceeded to serve them lunch. Immediately after lunch we handed out food parcels, as they also have been hit hard with the hardships of HIV. Many of their kids have died and have left behind their kids to be cared for.

This is the last day of our blog. Our hearts will always be here in spirit to the many people that we have met in South Africa. It will take several days to comprehend all that we have seen, heard and experience. And since we now own what we have seen, heard and experienced, we can only continue helping one day at a time!

The Journey - Day 7

We started out with a visit to the home of one first Monkey Biz creators. It was nice to see so many people bringing in their personal pieces of work in order to create a better life for them and their families. This is the premises of Monkey Biz.

This also gave us the opportunity to walk around the township and visit some of the residences of the people that sell their work to Monkey Biz. It was great to see that many of these people have been able to improve their financial status.

Then we went on to Philani Employment - another business opportunity for people to create and sell textiles, such as, placemats, bags and rugs. We then went over to TAC (Treatment Action Campaign) to learn about their opportunities & challenges with the people of Khayelitsha that are living with HIV, TB or other sexually transmitted diseases.

The Journey - Day 6

Today was the day for food parcels at the Zawanie Center. We started at the Makro's (Costco) to buy all the supplies for the buckets that were going to be delivered. It took 2 trucks to haul all the supplies to the center in Gugeletu.

We then separated all the supplies into the buckets, which included some of these items; flour, sugar, rice, beans, cornmeal, chicken and sweets for the children. It took awhile, but was amazing how we all worked in harmony...It was rewarding to hear the HIV support group do a play and sing for us as a token of appreciation.

Then we were off to a local restaurant in Gugeletu that was out of this world - we actually had the restaurant to ourselves at 6 o'clock at night. Pretty cool...and this will be a day that will require us to mentally process over time.

The Journey - Day 5

Today was another day that was focused on learning about the South African culture. We hiked up to Monkey Biz and Street Wire which are two organizations that help with HIV infected people. Monkey Biz is a non-profit that sustains people in the townships with HIV for gainful employment (buys their personal work) and Street Wire, actually employs people from the townships.

We then moved on to Robin Island. It is so hard to even imagine the hardships that these political prisoners encounter during their stay at the island. We had the pleasure of having the tour with two of the 11 prisoners still living and working on the island. As we all can imagine, it must be hard to be working on an island that kept you prisoner for so long, but they simply view it as a way to give back to make sure that this does not happen again in our lifetime. As they put it, you know that you can leave...

Tomorrow, we are off to Guguletu to pack and deliver the food parcels.

The Journey - Day 4

The day started out with a lovely breakfast and then we were off to Sunday service at the Zwanie Center in Guguletu. This is one of those experience that can only be told if you are in there in person, both spiritually and physically. It was truly amazing to see people that have so many hardships still have so much faith, love and happiness.

Just seeing the kids enjoying the service, eating their chips, yogurt and a few lollipops. Here, kids were being kids, parents were being parents that loved their kids and all enjoyed seeing the photographs of the ones they love.
We then left and continued our day by visiting the open air markets to help support the local economy and to Larry's delight, he was not referred to as my father...

Today is a rather emotional day as it is hard to truly put a perspective on the lives of the people that are affected by HIV and extreme poverty. You just do not know where to even begin; financially, emotionally, spiritually or even simply trying to roll up your sleeves to help...

The Journey - Day 3

OK, the baboon was kind enough to return the pictures but Larry is still at large...LOL...Larry is really with us.

Today, we had the opportunity to go to the JL Zwane Center. This is the center Open Arms supports here in South Africa. We delivered medical supplies and listened to Stevo, the Minister of the center, talk to the group about the challenges and opportunities.

We then ventured over to Rhodes Memorial to have lunch and talk about our experience with the group.

The Journey - Day 2

Today we ventured to Boulder Point, Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. It involved a lot of walking and wildlife. It was a great opportunity to understand the environment (Penguins, Baboons, Ostriches and Dassies) and some of the early South African natural history. Would love to share some photos, but Larry was attacked by a wild baboon, not really, so we will have photo to post on Saturday!

The Journey - Day 1

Well, today we started the journey of our South African adventure. To start the day off right, we went into Cape Town to explore the Pan African Market. Where to my delight, I was mistaken for Larry's Son - LOL! Of Course, Larry is only a few years older than me, but we, or should say I, I welcomed that comment and Larry was ready to pack his bags and head back to Minnesota!

In all seriousness, we got our first taste of the city life and its culture. The first part of our journey is to understand as much of the culture as we can prior to going into the villages. We had the opportunity to go to the ocean front and take in the sites where Larry and I recouped from our 24 hours of traveling...

Tomorrow we will be off to Simons Point, Boulder Beach and Cape of Good Hope, weather pending...

Mission To South Africa - The Journey

Mad BJ Founder, Brad Hanson is one of the Minnesotans proud to give his time and resources for the people of Guguletu -- an impoverished township near Cape Town, South Africa. Life is invariably hard for its 300,000 citizens, but it's hardest for the nearly one-third carrying HIV. When infection leads to debilitating AIDS, obtaining food is often financially and logistically impossible. In Guguletu, it's not at all uncommon for AIDS patients to starve to death long before illness would otherwise claim them.
