Ready two Know

There's a large faction of the Ready two Go family who resides in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul for those of you who are unfamiliar). As I type, both cities are gearing up for an onslaught of media and conventioneers as the Republican National Convention makes ready to swing into St. Paul. The Democratic National Convention is already at full speed in Colorado.

Now that the candidates are being officially recognized and we know who their running mates are (well, McCain's veep will be announced shortly), take some time to become familiar with their stance on issues that matter to you.

We at Ready two Go are naturally interested in how the candidates stack up on HIV/AIDs funding, global health and sex education.

Value of HPV vaccine for adults questioned

Note the wording of the above headline.

The word “value” is meant to denote dollar value in this article, not the drug’s viability. The article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press details the FDA’s reluctance to approve the Gardasil vaccine, which may protect against HPV, for use in women in their mid-twenties to mid-forties. Currently, it has been approved and is being marketed to girls in target ages 11 and 12, presumably before becoming sexually active. It is meant to guard against the strains of HPV which may cause cervical cancer.

Because of its effectiveness, makers of the vaccine wanted to market it to older women as well. Per the article in the link below, the vaccine for women in the 25 to 45 age bracket is cost prohibitive even though it has been effective and will, therefore, not be made available to adult women.

This just accentuates the need for individuals to proactively protect themselves from STDs. While condoms are not always an effective deterrent for HPV, they are successful against many other forms of STDs. Ultimately, education will be your best protection. We can’t always depend on the FDA to assist us with our sexual health, so get to know your options and arm yourself with the proper tools.
